| Id ul-Fitr, popularly known as
Ramadan (but ideally pronounced Ramzan), falls in the seventh month of the
lunar year (January- February) and is a major festival of the Muslims of
Kerala. |

| Throughout this
month, Muslims observe a day-long fast. Purification of the body and soul is
the main purpose of this religious rite. |
|
| The festival of Id
ul-Fitr festival begins with the sighting of the crescent moon on the western
horizon and with that the fasting ends. |
|
| The main activity of the
festival is the distribution of food to the poor and needy. In the morning,
devotees proceed to the mosque or Id-Gali to attend the congregational prayer
led by the Imam.
